Were these the origin of last century's flying duck ornaments?
From the British Museum exhibition Ice Age Art: The Arrival of the Modern Mind. I love how the formal curatorial language has been set aside for the more accurate phrase 'a wonder of nature'. As we wait for our own winter to pass, think of these early humans when the arrival of migratory birds such as swans and geese were the annual big signal that lakes had unfrozen and food for man and animal would start to grow again. The swans in the exhibition were carved from mammoth ivory and exhibited in a formation that reminded me of the 'flying duck' ornaments displayed on grandma's wall.
